Martha Fenech describes Miss World Festival

Thursday, January 22nd, 2009

Miss World Contest has definitely changed my life! I am very proud and blessed that I have been able to participate in Miss World because it has truly been an amazing experience. Being just eighteen years old I know I have achieved so much at such a young age. This experience has taught me a lot and matured me more in many ways. Most important of all I have made friends with some great girls. I know that our friendship will last forever! When I arrived in South Africa , all the contestants were divided into four big groups alphabetically, so I got to know my group better than the rest, yet I managed to speak to all the contestants. We got on really well and it was like we had known each other for ages. To be honest I never imagined that we could all become so close to each other like one big family when we were all competing for the same title! I had the impression that there would be an uneasy feeling between us yet we were all eager to get to know each other and learn about our different cultures and countries. At first I felt very homesick; I had never been away from home for a whole month and had never travelled such a long distance entirely on my own. I am very close to my family so I missed them a lot. Luckily I immediately made a lot of friends who felt the same way so that made me feel better! Apart from this, the South Africans are really warm and friendly people so we all felt welcomed, but I still couldn’t wait to see my family and friends again!! I was so happy to see my family after two weeks, they gave me their support and this helped me a lot as there were no other Maltese people! We had the opportunity to travel a lot in one month. We stayed in Johannesburg yet we also spent a few days in Durban . This was really interesting as I noticed big cultural differences between these two cities. Durban is a seaside city so it is very different from Joburg. Apart from this Durban has a majority of Indian people living there so it has a totally different culture. Joburg is a beautiful modern city, the largest in South Africa . Gold and diamonds are major industries in the city. I had the opportunity to visit a real gold mine at Gold Reef City . It was appalling to see the conditions in which miners worked and the way they were exploited. We were staying at Sandton City which is in the heart of Joburg. It is a city filled with diversity having people from different races and cultures. We also had the chance to visit Mpumalanga were we visited God’s Window and I have to say it definitely is a heavenly place .We also visited Soweto were we received a very warm welcome from the local people who threw us a huge party in the middle of the street! It really was a great day; however it was heartbreaking to see how much this particular area suffered from racial discrimination. We also spent five days on a safari and golf resort and I have to say these days were the best! We used to get up very early in the morning and spend the whole day exploring different aspects of nature. We slept in huts, built nests, planted trees, were very close to the wild animals and on one occasion we even cooked our own meal, the true South African way. I am very glad that I had the opportunity to experience all this and learn what makes South Africa unique and so different from other countries. With you thinking they make you feel very important. I believed in myself and in my country. However I was very disappointed to learn that so many people had never even heard about us, but this made me even more determined to prove myself as after all I was a participant in this contest just like all the others. I felt very proud! Especially in the opening were I was introduced as Malta ! It may seem strange but I didn’t feel nervous at all! I was sure of what I had to do so I didn’t feel scared or shy. Having my family present helped a lot to boost my confidence. It definitely is one of the proudest moments of my life. I couldn’t believe that I was actually participating in Miss World, the same contest which I had watched when I was a young girl dreaming that someday I will be there too! During our stay we were all treated well yet I did notice that certain countries were given much more importance and privileges than others. Over all I think that the organisation has been very successful in making Miss World 2008 memorable and very special to all of us. I had the opportunity to meet the top fashion designers of South Africa . I also had the chance to wear some of their outfits which were so beautiful! During my month in South Africa I also had the opportunity to meet international photographers and pageant directors; I have become great friends with Miss Bahamas ‘ director who is from Puerto Rico .I was very excited to meet the group McFly and the singer Alicia Dixon! They were also present at the after party which was held after the final night where we all partied together! That was a great night! I was mostly impressed with Miss World 2007, Zhang Zilin. She has that powerful presence and personifies everything a Miss World should strive to be. Above all she is a very humble person and I do think that this is a characteristic which makes her even more special. Miss World 2008, Ksenia of Russia is a very beautiful and graceful woman. She does give out the perfect image of what a Miss World should look like. In my opinion there were other contestants who deserved the crown too as they were perfect, and I am not only talking about physical beauty, I am talking about their inner beauty. They were amazing, warm and friendly women who really did want to make a difference in the world and I am sure that they would have done a great job. Yet as we all know there can only be one winner! I am sure that the new Miss World was chosen for a reason and I am sure that she will eventually do a great job too! I would tell the next representative to enjoy herself and to make the most of the experience. It is a unique experience which will surely change her. She must never give up or feel inferior in any way. She has the responsibility to present herself and her country to the world in the best way possible. Most importantly she must keep in mind that all the contestants are winners. To have the privilege to participate in such an event is something very special, not too many women have that great fortune in their lives. - MARTHA FENECH – MISS WORLD MALTA
